About Me

My name is Judd Viljoen, and I am a registered Counselling Psychologist based in Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa. I also work at Akeso Milnerton offering individual psychotherapy to inpatients as well as conduct group process within the various wards. I hold a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (Distinction) from Rhodes University, where I trained in a range of therapeutic modalities with a strong focus on Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. I've had the privilege of working in various clinical and community settings, including psychiatric hospitals, university clinics, and private practices, where I’ve supported individuals and groups from diverse cultural, social, and psychological backgrounds.

I specialize in Couples Therapy, LGBTQI+ mental health, Addiction, Grief/Bereavement, Sexuality, Mood Disorders, and Personality Disorders such Borderline Personality Disorder, to name a few. Gay men's mental health has been of particular interest to me and was the foundation for my Masters thesis titled "Narratives of Resilience in Coming Out: The initial experiences of young South African persons who identify as gay and male."

I’m particularly drawn to the complexity of human relationships and inner emotional life, and I work from a place of deep respect for the unique stories, struggles, and strengths each person brings into the therapeutic space. My approach is relational and reflective, grounded in creating a safe and authentic environment where meaningful growth can occur.

Outside of my clinical work, I have a longstanding passion for music—especially opera— and the art of drag, which both continue to be a source of inspiration, discipline, and creative expression in my life. I believe that the arts, much like therapy, allow us to confront the rawness of human experience and to find beauty, truth, and transformation through it. I bring this spirit of emotional honesty and curiosity into the work I do with each of my clients.

Types of therapy

My therapeutic approach is grounded in the foundations of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), integrating insight-oriented and evidence-based techniques to support clients in understanding both the unconscious patterns that shape their lives and the practical tools needed to foster change. While these two modalities form the core of my practice, I take an integrative stance, drawing flexibly from a range of approaches including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal Therapy, and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I am also informed by multicultural and culturally sensitive frameworks, and relationship-oriented models such as the Gottman Method and Imago Therapy. This allows me to tailor the therapeutic process to each client's unique context and needs, whether the work is focused on individuals, couples, or families. My aim is to create a collaborative, emotionally safe space where deeper self-awareness and meaningful growth can emerge.
